Description:
Family portrait of George Eliot Jr., his wife Patience Lane and their son Ely August. The two adults are seated in red chairs; the son stands between them. The father holds a book in his lap; and the son is showing an open book to his mother. The mother is dressed in a blue dress, with white lace collar and ruffled 3/4 length sleeves, and a white bonnet. Her proper right arm rests on a table with green cloth with gold fringe, and dangling from her wrist is a white purse with red flowers. Behind the figures is a shelf of leather bound books and red drapery.
