PIONEERED IN NAVAL AVIATION AND WAS INSTRUCTOR 1921/1938 TO 1940, EXECUTIVE OFFICER, NAS PENSACOLA. ARCHITECT OF/TOKYO RAID, DEPLOYED 2 APRIL 1942. DURING WWII, COMMANDED/THE NAVY'S FIRST ESCORT CARRIER AND PIONEERED DEVELOPMENT OF/AIRCRAFT TECHNIQUES FROM THIS NEW TYPE OF SHIP. IN 1942 COM-/MANDED U. S. ESSEX IN ENGAGEMENT AGAINST THE ENEMY WHICH/EARNED THE SHIP THE PRESIDENTIAL UNIT CITATION. AT THE END OF/WWII WAS SERVING AS COMMANDER SECOND FLEET IN THE ATLANTIC/PRIOR TO HIS APPOINTMENT TO FULL ADMIRAL AS VICE CHIEF OF/NAVAL OPERATIONS, WHERE HE SERVED FOR SIX YEARS. ADMIRAL/DUNCAN RETIRED FROM ACTIVE DUTY IN 1957, AND RESIDED IN/PENSACOLA, FLORIDA UNTIL HIS DEATH SEPTEMBER 8, 1975/BURIED IN BARRANCAS NATIONAL CEMETERY. (Small plaque on lower, front of base:) HIGH IN THE AIR, WIDE OVER THE SEAS/STEADFAST UPON EARTH WITH FAITH IN GOD/DONALD BRADLEY DUNCAN/THIS BUST PRESENTED TO THE NAVAL AIR STATION/IN LOVING OF/MY LATE HUSBAND/JULY 28, 1979/ANIELA MATEJA DUNCAN signed Founder's mark appears.
