Anthony Harpin Davies was born on April 28, 1798 (or 1799), in Derby, Connecticut, the son of Joseph and Ruth (Harpin) Davies. He moved to Nashville, Tennessee as a young man, where he served as bookkeeper for Flowers & Company. He moved to Arkansas, and then to Tuscumbia, Alabama, then Little Rock in 1829, and to Chicot County, Arkansas in 1835. His first marriage was to a woman from the Aldridge family, who died while visiting Louisville, Kentucky. On Feb. 12, 1841, he married his second wife, Mildred Pollard Gaines, sister of John Pollard Gaines, the second governor of the Oregon Territory. Davies was a member of the first Arkansas State Constitutional Convention in 1836. He was also a judge, state legislator, planter, merchant, and banker.
