Metropolitan Museum of Art, 5th Avenue at 82nd Street, New York, New York 10028 Accession Number: 65.34.

Formerly in the collection of Crossfield, family of, until 1965.
Nathan Liverant and Sons, Colchester, Connecticut 1965.
Remarks:
The painting descended in the Crossfield family and was originally thought to be a portrait of Stephen Crossfield, Sr., the New York shipbuilder and landowner, and was thought to have been painting ca. 1730-1740. When the artist attribution changed to William Williams, and the execution date changed to ca. 1770-1775, the identity of the sitter was thought to be Crossfield's son, also named Stephen Crossfield. He was born on July 10, 1765 and died on May 8, 1790.
