Samuel W. Crawford (1829-1892) commanded the Pennsylvania Reserve Corps in the defense of Washington in May 1863. He led the regiment at Gettysburg, where they made up the 3rd Division of Sykes' Corps and in all the operations of the Army of the Potomac until the close of the war. For related reading, see "Generals in Blue: Lives of the Union Commanders," by Ezra J. Warner, Louisiana State University, 1964, pg. 99. Though it took until 1988 to erect a monument to General Crawford, an article discussing the Gettysburg Monument Commission's original recommendation to the governor to erect a monument to General Crawford appears in Monumental News, Jan. 1913, pg. 62.
