    Description:
History painting depicting the Battle of Bunker's Hill when British troops occupying Boston tried to advance toward Charlestown and Dorchester. General Warren is seen shot and killed, lying on the ground in the arms of a fellow soldier in the middle of the battlefield. Standing above them to the right is British major John Small, who prevents his grenadier from bayoneting Warren in revenge for the death of an officer who lies dead at their feet. Just behind them, British major John Pitcairn falls dying into the arms of his son. On the opposite side of the painting, to the far left, General Putnam of Connecticut, raises his sword and orders the American troops to retreat. In the center background, the commander of the British troops, Gen. William Howe stands next to the white-haired Gen. Henry Clinton. On the lower right corner, Lieutenant Thomas Grosvenor of Connecticut watches the scene unfold. An unidentified African-American stands behind him. Some have identified him as Peter Salem, a free man who as a member of the army fought at the Battle of Bunker's Hill.
