Remarks:
The portrait was painted in New York. Archibald Scott Christian was born in 1809 near Lexington, Virginia and died in 1868. He went to Alabama as a young man, and settled in Tuscumbia, where he operated a large plantation and wholesale enterprise. He married Pauline Cabell Lewis of Tuscumbia on March 21, 1833. In 1939 the portrait was owned by Mrs. A. J. Cheatham, granddaughter of the sitter.
