Description:
A sundial supported by a bronze sea turtle with a tilted half sphere on the turtle's back. The flat side of the half-sphere is the face of the sundial. At the top of the sundial are three interlaced bronze medallion bas-relief bust-length portraits of navigators Fortuno Ximenes, Juan de Cabrillo, and Sir Francis Drake. On the sphere side of the sundial are the continents of North and South America in bas-relief. The sculpture rests atop a granite Roman column with a fluted lower section. The pedestal is placed atop a wide three-tiered square base.

The sculpture was commissioned by the National Society of Colonial Dames to honor the first three navigators of the California coast, Fortuno Ximenes, Juan de Cabrillo, and Sir Francis Drake.
