    Description: 
    Portrait of Captain John Brown (1697-1764), seated, turned 3/4 to the right and shown almost full-length, to just below the knees. He wears a powdered wig which falls to his shoulders, a white neckcloth and small muslin shirt ruffle, a brown coat, waistcoat and knee-breeches and white stockings. His right hand, holding a quill-pen, rests upon a small cloth-covered table with ink stand, quill pen and two letters.
