Owner reported that the sitter, James Watson Brown (1813-1892), was born in Framingham. He was a graduate of Williams College, a selectman of Framingham and a representative to the General Court (legislature). With Charles R. Train, Alexander Esty and others, he was one of the organizers of St. John's Episcopal Church (now St. Andrews) and its first senior warden. With several other citizens of the town, he gave land for the Normal School. He was the first Superintendent of Schools in Framingham.
