Remarks:
Jacob Brodbeck (1821-1910) was instrumental in the development of Gillespie County. He also taught, and in his spare time invented an "airship," which he flew on Sept. 20, 1863. Many of his basic designs in aerodynamics are still in use today. The sculpture was erected by his family, the Fredericksburg Independent School District and the Gillespie County Historical Society. For related material see "Jacob Brodbeck: Reached for the sky" by Anita Teach, Diesel and Sons (Fredericksburg, TX), 1986.
