Owner reports that William August Ernest Bredemeyer (1800-1850) came to Baltimore from Bremen, Germany when he was 14. He then established his own steamship line which he merged with Schumaker and Company of Baltimore. Later he played a leading role in the establishment of the first great transatlantic line, the North German Lloyd. He commissioned this portrait, also having a copy made for his office. The latter portrait burned in a fire.
