    The painting was executed in the Bethell home in Tulip, Dallas County, Arkansas. The painting was later lost in a fire. William P. Bethell was the son of John and Sarah Smith Bethell. Originally from Charlotte, North Carolina, the family moved to Memphis, en route to New Orleans. They later moved to Arkansas to avoid a cholera epidemic, settling in Tulip, Dallas County, Arkansas.
