George H. Mitchell & Co. of Chicago (On west front of base:) In honor of the Heroes who fell while fighting for us in the Army of the Confederate States, 1861-1865. (On east back of base:) Though adverse fortune denied final victory to their undaunted courage, history preserves their fame made glorious forever. Confederate Memorial. Founder's mark appears.
Description:
A tall obelisk surmounted by a bronze figure of a soldier standing at parade rest. He wears a uniform and holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands. The butt of the rifle rests on the plinth at his feet. His proper left leg is slightly forward. At the base of the obelisk are two granite figures, one of a cavalryman and one of an artilleryman. Beneath the obelisk is a tiered base of granite.

Remarks:
The three figures were based on photographs of three local soldiers: the bronze infantryman was W. R. Bringhurst; the cavalryman was Clay Stacker; and the artilleryman was Charles H. Bailey. All three men were volunteers in Forbes Bivouac and all three survived the war. The monument was erected by Forbes Bivouac, United Confederate Veterans, and a Committee of other Montgomery County Citizens. IAS files contain related article from Civil War Centennial Commission of Tennessee, "Directory of Civil War Monuments and Memorials in Tennessee," Nashville, 1963, pg. 53 which gives the inscription.
