Remarks:
Facade sculpture commemorates important individuals in San Diego's history. Included is Franciscan padre Father Junipero Serra, who founded the Mission San Diego de Alcala on July 16, 1769, which became the birthdate for the City; Spanish explorer Sebastion Vizcaino, who discovered San Diego Bay in 1602; George Vancouver, English navigator, who sailed into San Diego Bay in 1783 and Father Luis Jayme, California's first Christian martyr. Also depicted are Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, Portuguese-born explorer, discoverer of San Diego Bay in 1542; Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola, who became the first governor of California and Father Antonio de la Ascencion a cartographer for Vizcaino.
The architect of the California State Building was Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue. The statues are the work of Furio and Attilio Piccirilli; ornamental work by Horatio and Thomas Piccirilli.
