Remarks:
The idea for the memorial originated with the Ladies Park Association and by 1891 they had begun raising money for the monument. In 1893, granite for the monument was shipped from Quincy, Illinois and work was begun. The monument was finished in 1896 and on Dec. 15, 1897, the statue of the soldier was placed on top. The statue cost $1,200. The statue was carved by John Hart, and posed for by Charles Andrews. When the memorial was first erected Kennedy Square was known as Central Square. (It was later renamed Pershing Square, before being named Kennedy Square, after John F. Kennedy's assassination). IAS files contain copy of Downtown Walking Tour brochure from the Lawrence County Historical Society.
