Description:
Jose de Andrada is standing holding a cape over his proper left shoulder and grasping a scroll in his proper right hand. He wears a cut-away jacket, vest and boots. The broad, horizontal pedestal of the monument forms part of a wall to Bryant Park. On the pedestal is the seal of the United States of Brazil.

Remarks:
Jose de Andrada was important in the establishment of the independent empire of Brazil in 1822. He later became interior minister and foreign minister. The sculpture was a gift from the Brazilian government to the City of New York in recognition of Brazilian-American friendship. The Brazilian government sponsored an open competition in Brazil for the design which fit the guidelines established by the New York City Parks Department. Additional information is available in Bryant Park File of the Art & Architecture Department at the New York Public Library on 42nd Street, and at the Bryant Park Restoration Corporation located at 6 East 43rd Street.
