The Alling Children, (painting).
Artist:
Eddy, Oliver Tarbell, 1799-1868, painter.
Title:
The Alling Children, (painting).
Dates:
ca. 1839.
Medium:
Oil on canvas.
Dimensions:
47 1/8 x 62 7/8 in. (119.7 x 159.7 cm).
Description:
Portrait of the first four children of Stephen Ball Alling (1808-1861), a partner in the Newark, New Jersey jewelry firm of Alling, Hall, and Dodd, and his wife Jane H. Weir (1811-1889). From left to right the children are Stephen Ball Alling (1835-1839), Mary Wilder Alling (b. 1836), Cornelia Meigs Alling (b. 1833), and Emma Alling (b. 1831). The portrait was probably painted shortly after the death of Stephen Ball Alling, as he stands in a pool of light, to the left of his sisters who are grouped together. The children are shown in the family parlor with a Brussels-style floor cloth in shades of brown, yellow, red, and pink. Stephen holds a hammer and a nail, and at his feet is a board with a nail in it. Mary in a yellow dress is seated on a late Empire stool, a cat held in her arms. Cornelia stands in the middle wearing a pink satin off-the-shoulder-dress, a white handkerchief held in her right hand. Emma in a fray brocade dress with a red necklace, is seated on the right, a prayer book held in her right hand.
