From the Buffalo Courier (Buffalo, New York), March 17, 1905, the article "MISS KAAN AND MISS CRAWFORD BUSY" includes the following: "Miss Kaan and Miss Crawford, who occupy a pleasant studio on the top floor of the Women's Educational and Industrial Union, are among the busiest artists in the city and their bright, sunny studio is filled works of art which they have done during the winter months. They are unusually versatile with their work extending from portraits to landscape painting, ideal heads and decorative pictures and the (...illegible) wood cuts. Miss Kaan, who gives most of her time to painting portraits has just completed an excellent portrait of Mr. Charles Rohlfs. Miss Crawford is a present working on a picture of Mrs. Rohlfs. Both portraits are actual size and will be set in artistic frames of Mr. Rohlfs' own design. Miss Kaan has also finished a striking landscape which is called 'The Pond.' It is a bit of Orchard Park - a pond in which is reflected the surrounding trees, the entire scene bathed in a grey mist. Her latest work, which is almost complete, promises to be of special interest. It is a portrait of an old man playing a violin (IAP 9F600307). The object of the sketch is a tall old fashioned man with a fine head of white snowy hair. It is a full sized portrait, and as Miss Kaan works on the picture her subject plays his old violin, giving an unusual touch of the past to the work. Miss Crawford, although giving considerable time to portrait painting, has also devoted many hours to the painting of ideal heads and to interesting decorative sketched of flowers. She also has found a little time for the pretty wood cuts which hand in large numbers about the studio."
