Painted from death masks of Susan White Plummer, born Roxbury, Massachusetts October 12, 1844, died November 17, 1845 and Charles Henry Plummer, born in Roxbury, Massachusetts October 28, 1842, died October 27, 1845. One of two portraits painted of the children, the mother did not like the expressions on Susie and Charley's faces, and so had another painted immediately after the first one.
