    Description: 
    Portrait of Mrs. Lavinia Pike seated on the end of a red upholstered sofa, her body turned slightly to the left, her gaze directed down, and her arms wrapped around her baby daughter Mary Elizabeth seated on a pillow with her back resting against the arm of the sofa. Mrs. Pike wears a long-sleeved black dress adorned with an elaborate white lace collar and ruffled white lace cuffs. On her head she wears a ruffled white lace bonnet adorned with a wide yellow ribbon tied in two a large bows. Her dark hair falls in ringlets around her face, and she wears long dangle earrings. Her daughter Mary Elizabeth plays with a long gold chain worn around her mother's neck. The baby has blond hair and wears a white dress with puffed sleeves trimmed with blue bows. In the background, drapery is pulled back to reveal a window with a rural landscape.
