Thought to be a portrait of Mary Jaquelin Smith, wife of Jacob Morgan (1781-1855), owner of Falling Spring in Sheperdstown, West Virginia. Born October 9, 1800, she was the daughter of Augustine and Susanna Taylor Smith and was the mother of five children, including Col. William Augustine Morgan of the Civil War. It is believed that the portrait was painted by David Hunter Strother as his journal states having painted a portrait of Mrs. Morgan in the spring of 1840.
