    Three-quarter-length portrait of Mrs. Clark Gayton (ca. 1748-1809) seated in a red armchair. She rests her left elbow at a table and touches her finger to her face. She holds a pen in her right hand and a stack of folios is at her side. A flower sits on the table; the sky is seen out the window at right.
