    Portrait of Mrs. Charles Apthorp seated with her body turned to the left, her head turned to face viewer, her left hand holding an open copy of John Milton's "Paradise Lost" in her lap, and her right hand resting on the base of a large white column. She wears a brown silk dress with white ruffled cuffs, and a low-cut neckline adorned with a white ruffle and a pin. Her dark hair is pulled back from her face, with a small curl resting on her right shoulder. In the background there is an expanse of dark blue silk drapery on the right, a thick white column in the middle, and a rural landscape on the left.
