The sculpture is mounted in a canopied niche above main entrance. Also above the main entrance facade are two bas-relief portraits in profile. On the left is Native American Leopold Pokagon wearing a full headdress. On the right is French explorer Rene-Robert Cavelier La Salle donning a plumed hat.
High relief sculptures of 12 male athletes are located in niches on the north and south sides of the building (six on each side). The athletes depicted are: a relay racer (holding a baton in proper right hand), a lacrosse player, a football player (cradling a football in his proper right arm); a hockey player (holding top of hockey stick at chest); a fencer (with saber); a basketball player seen in profile. a baseball player (with bat over proper right shoulder); a discus thrower (also seen in profile); a wrestler, a tennis player with racquet and ball, a swimmer in a diving position, and a golfer gripping a club.
