Description:
Ceramic tile mural depicting ten different scenes illustrating the benefits of public health and welfare systems in Washington, D.C. On the left side, the first scene depicts a social worker assisting a mother and her family; then a doctor and nurse attend to a family; an agricultural official inspects produce, meats, and fish for sale in the city; two chemists examine specimens; a doctor examines two patients; a family visits a patient in a hospital bed; a nurse administers medicine to patients in a wheel chair and on crouches; a family applies for social security; a supervisor observes brick layers; a family applies to adopt a boy.

Remarks:
The mural was created as part of the Works Progress Administration which provided 25,000 dollars to the artist for her work. The Atlantic Terra Cotta Company fabricated the mural using detailed drawings provided by the artist. IAS files contain copy of article from the Washington Post, Jan. 16, 2000, pg. B7, which discusses contoversy over proposed sale of government building and fate of building murals.
