The effort for erecting this memorial was first conceived by Samuel Juliano, who advanced 5,300 dollars of the total twenty-two thousand dollars. The additional funds were raised by clergymen, businessmen and veteran's groups as well as by a stage benefit and general contributions. The monument to the 5,000 men and women of the Eighth Ward who had served in the war was unveiled by the Gold Star Mothers.
