William Hanna was a wagon and carriage maker, and partner in the firm of Hanna and Beisle Wagon and Carriage Works. He married Margaret Beisle, the daughter of his partner. He lived in Wooster from 1840-1880.

William W. Hanna (1822-1881) was born in New York, but raised in Wooster Ohio. William was the son of Thomas Hanna and Prescilla Goading. William Hanna purchased the Wooster carriage manufacturing business of Peter Van Nest in 1847 and continued this occupation until he committed suicide in 1881 by hanging himself by the neck in the back of his carriage shop on North Bever Street at about the age of 58. You’ll notice the signed date of this portrait is 1881, which indicates it may have been painted as a death remembrance.
