Description:  A nude male, symbolizing pioneer Richard Carter, stands holding an axe over his head, blunt side up, ready to swing down at a property stake in the ground in front of him. Three additional property stakes lie on the ground near him. The park is constructed on the original homesite of Richard Carter, the area's first settler. Using a land grant from Mexico, Carter staked his claim by building a one-room log cabin in October of 1831. The sculpture represents him staking the claim that resulted in the settlement of College Station and the Brazos Valley. The sculpture and park were dedicated on September 13, 1986.
