    Remarks:
The sculpture was commissioned for Richard Carter Park by the City of College Station and funded by the Brazos County Fine Arts Council and the Brazos County Sesquicentennial Committee. The park is constructed on the original homesite of Richard Carter, the area's first settler. Using a land grant from Mexico, Carter staked his claim by building a one-room log cabin in October of 1831. The sculpture represents him staking the claim that resulted in the settlement of College Station and the Brazos Valley. The sculpture and park were dedicated on September 13, 1986. IAS files contain two related articles from the Bryan-College Station Eagle: March 2, 1986, pg. 1E and Sept. 14, 1986.
