Owner:
Dr. Ramon Emeterio Betances School, 42 Charter Oak Avenue, Hartford, Connecticut 06106
Remarks:
Commissioned by Hartford's La Casa de Puerto Rico for approximately $44,000. It honors Dr. Ramon Emeterio Betances (1827-1898), a Puerto Rican physician, founder of the abolitionist movement there, and author of the "Ten Conditions of Free Men." This is reportedly the first piece of public art in Connecticut to honor a Puerto Rican. The school was known as the Richard J. Kinsella School until it was renamed for Dr. Betances on Nov. 7, 1985. The sculpture was dedicated on Puerto Rico Discovery Day, Nov. 19th. IAS files include biographical information on Dr. Betances.
