Medium:  Panels: Bedford limestone; Bases: Bedford limestone. Dimensions:  5 panels. Each panel: approx. 8 ft. x 13 1/2 ft. x 5 in.; Each base: approx. 2 ft. x 12 1/2 ft. x 5 in. (Each panel: 10 tons). Inscription:  (On right side of base of Washington panel:) SCULPTURE BY/E.H. DANIELS SC. (On panels above figures, raised lettering:) (Kentucky panel:) KENTUCKY/1809/1816 (Indiana panel:) INDIANA/1816/1830 (And He Now Belongs to the Ages panel:) AND NOW HE BELONGS/TO THE AGES (Illinois panel:) ILLINOIS/1830/1861 (Washington panel:) WASHINGTON/1861/1865 signed Description:  Five bas-relief panels mounted in a semi-circle on building facade depict periods in Abraham Lincoln's life. The Kentucky panel features the childhood years of Lincoln (1809-1816) spent on the Sinking Spring and Knob Creek farms. A group of figures is seen outside a log cabin. On the far left, in frontier clothes, is family neighbor Jesse LaFollette; beside him stands Thomas Lincoln (father of the President) and seated is Dr. Christopher Columbus Graham, doctor, scientist and visitor at the Lincoln home. Graham is shown in cape and hat, telling the seven year old Lincoln a story. Behind Lincoln is his mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, and his sister Sarah, standing at a churn. On the far right is Caleb Hazel, Lincoln's second school teacher. The Indiana panel depicts the boyhood days of Lincoln (1816-1830). He is seen as a young frontiersman, with axe in hand, shown with friends and relatives of the Little Pigeon Creek Community. At the extreme left is James Gentry, a wealthy farmer and merchant, that Abe visited frequently. Next to him is Josiah Crawford, for whom Lincoln worked for three days to pay for a book he borrowed which was damaged by rain. Behind Abe (the railsplitter), holding a hewn log are Aaron Grigsby (husband of Lincoln's sister) and Dennis Hanks (his mother's cousin). To the right is James Gentry's son Allen, who was Lincoln's companion on a trip to New Orleans. Beside him is Thomas Lincoln's second wife, Sarah Bush Lincoln. The Illinois panel depicts early political years (1830-1861). A beardless Congressman Lincoln stands, in suit jacket and tie, with law partners John Stuart and Stephen T. Logan. Grasping his proper right hand with both of his hands is close friend Joshua Speed. William Herndon stands between them and Simon Francis is seated to his rear. On the far right side of the panel are Mary Todd Lincoln and Orville H. Browning. The Washington panel (1861-1865) shows a bearded President Lincoln in top hat and knee-length suit standing facing General Ulysses S. Grant. The two are shown at Grant's headquarters in Petersburg, Virginia surrounded four Civil War soldiers. The central panel "And Now He Belongs To the Ages," shows a standing, robed Lincoln, with figures of a farmer, laborer, mother and child, and freedman, on the left. To the right is Cleo (Muse of History), holding a scroll listing Lincoln's accomplishments, and Columbia, holding forth a laurel wreath. In the background, a cabin and the White House symbolize American opportunity. The Indiana Lincoln Union spearheaded the effort. Artist Lee Oskar Lawrie served as consultant for the project. The panels were carved by Harvey Liva, Joseph Slincard and Jesse Corbin. Contractors for the project were the Sare Hoadley Stone Company of Bloomington and Albert Hoadley. The panels were steam-cleaned in September of 1985. IAS files contain a complete transcription of nine Lincoln quotes inscribed on wall above panels.
