Possibly a Tlingit crest pole, this replica may also depict the Raven/Shark Legend. From top to bottom, the figures appear to be Raven, a shark or dogfish, a wolf or fox and a bear or stump. The story concerns Raven who fell in love with a woman from afar. After communicating through the woman's brother, Raven proposed marriage. Ashamed that her body did not match her beautiful face, she refused, until Raven convinced her that true beauty comes from within.

    Remarks:
This pole is replica carved in 1978 after the original pole decayed. The original was reportedly a gift of Chief Tom Taki'et of Tuxekan Village to Governor John Brady in 1903. The poles in the Brady Collection became part of the park in 1906. The original was exhibited at the New York World's Fair in 1964. IAS files contain an excerpt from "Carved History," a publication of the National Park Service.
IAS files contain a detailed condition assessment, "Carved Pole Condition Survey," June 1991, prepared by Ron Sheetz and Alan Levitan, National Park Service, Division of Conservation, Harpers Ferry Center. For detailed treatment information, see IAS files for "Sitka National Historical Park: Totem Pole Preservation Project/92," by Ron Sheetz and Alan Levitan, and a National Park Service publication, "Preservation Tech Notes: Exterior Woodwork," no. 4, Oct. 1993.
