LYLE E. JOHNSON (copyright symbol) 1991 (Plaque on concrete base:) LAKOTA MOTHER/A SIOUX LEGEND/Long ago when the world was young, great waters came. The waters covered the hunting grounds and the lodges of many tribes in the land of the rising and setting sun. The waters covered the people, and their blood and bones became the red pipestone./A bald Eagle swept down over the water and a woman of the people grabbed his leg. He flew with her to a great tree on a high cliff. There, Lakota Mother and the eagle became the mother and father of twins. The twins became the parents of a brave new tribe named the Sioux./The people fashioned a pipe of red pipestone. They smoked it as a pipe of peace, and the warriors wore the Eagle feather on their heads. signed

The Lakota woman is barefoot, has a feather in her hair and wears a V-necked, long-sleeved, ankle-length dress with fringes. She holds on to the eagle with her proper right hand; and steps up on a mound with her proper left foot. The sculpture is placed in the middle of a rectangular pool.
