Dates:
1938-1941.
Medium:
Carved cedar, painted.
Description:
Replica totem pole tells the story of the sea monster, called "Waasgo" in Haida and "Gunakadeit" in Tlingit. The story concerns a son-in-law who outwits his mother-in-law when he wears the skin of a sea monster he killed. The top figure is likely the mother-in-law. The bottom figures are reportedly the son-in-law in the skin of the sea monster, holding a whale in his mouth.

The original was reportedly a gift of Koonkeit of Klawock Village to Governor John Brady in 1903. It also may have originated in Sukkwan Village. The poles in the Brady Collection became part of the park in 1906. IAS files include an excerpt from "Carved History," a publication of the National Park Service.
IAS files contain a detailed condition assessment, "Carved Pole Condition Survey," June 1991, prepared by Ron Sheetz and Alan Levitan, National Park Service, Division of Conservation, Harpers Ferry Center. For detailed treatment information, see IAS files for "Sitka National Historical Park: Totem Pole Preservation Project/92," by Ron Sheetz and Alan Levitan, and a National Park Service publication, "Preservation Tech Notes: Exterior Woodwork," no. 4, Oct. 1993.
