Remarks:
The sculpture is cast number one in and edition of eight. The sculpture was a gift of the University of Delaware Class of 1953, presented by Frances Allmond, president of the University Library Association and spouse of sculptor Charles Allmond. Both the sculptor and his spouse are members of the Class of 1953. The sculpture was inspired by the theme of brotherhood in Schiller's poem "Ode to Joy" as incorporated into Beethoven's ninth, or choral, symphony. The artist likens the sculpture's design to a book on edge, with its four sections symbolizing the four years of undergraduate education. IAS files contain articles from The Review, Oct. 26, 1993, pg. A7, and The News Journal, Nov. 4, 1993, pg. 6.
