Description:
Taken from an illustration by Hubert Gravelot in Charles Rollin's "Roman History" (London, 1768), Trumbull painted the figure of the centurion Virginius on a door panel in his parents home. In what is thought to be the artist's earliest surviving work, he depicts Virginius raising a knife in his right hand and pointing down with his left. The scene takes place just after Virginius has stabbed to death his daughter Virginia to save her from the lust of ruler Appius Claudius.
