On the back of the painting there is a pencil notation with the artist's name and his Fenway Studios address in Boston. Attached to the stretcher is a National Academy of Design exhibition label. The painting was awarded the Joseph S. Isidor Gold Medal at the National Academy of Design's Ninety Sixth Annual Exhibition in 1921. The Isidor Medal was established in 1907 for achievement in figure painting and was awarded to National Academy of Design members. The painting sold at the NAD's Ninety Sixth Annual Exhibition in 1921. It was one of three paintings created as illustrations for Elizabeth Stuart Phelp's' book "Comrades" published in 1911 by Harper and Brothers, though the illustrations were in black and white. IAP files contain additional research about the painting and how it illustrates the plot of "Comrades." IAP files also contain an excerpt transcribed from New York Times, March 5, 1921 in a review of the Ninety Sixth Annual Exhibition of the National Academy of Design.
