The monument was funded by public subscription and honors men from the town who died in the Civil War. The monument was erected prior to the Park's creation in 1875. Conrads is believed to have sculpted the figure; Keller is believed to have designed the pedestal. The rifle has been missing since the mid-1940s. IAS files contain dedication program. Unpublished materials relating to the monument may be on file at the Salmon Brook Historical Society.
