Sears, who wrote under the pen name Nessmuk, was an early outdoor writer, woodsman, seaman, poet and pioneer conservationist. Sears was buried on private property, but his body was later moved to the Wellsboro Cemetery. The memorial sculpture was funded by members of the community. The stone base may be the original marker from the first gravesite.
