Ruins are on a hill at left, a hilltop is right of center, and two arches with a figure standing beneath one is in the foreground at right. Animals are on the both shores and a man in a rowboat is at center in the background.

Remarks:
Exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1846 as "Italian Sunset." Paired by the artist with "Il Penseroso" (IAP record 73261244). Both paintings are based on their respective poems by John Milton, translating the overall meaning of the poem into a landscape.
