    Remarks: 
    The sculpture was commissioned by the San Francisco Art Commission's Public Art Program and depicts a scene from a story written by the artist when he was a schoolboy. The story involves the rescue of a sailor by a mermaid who took the sailor to an underwater cave with an air pocket. The sculpture represents the mermaid's mother telling her reluctant daughter that she must let the sailor go.
