Description:
Full-length portrait of Civil War soldier Gordon Meldrum. He wears a uniform including cap and overcoat. He stands at parade rest. He holds the barrel of a rifle with both hands; the butt of the gun rests on the ground near his feet. The sculpture stands atop a granite shaft and pedestal.

Remarks:
Gordon Meldrum, a 17 year old resident of Caledonia, died of disease in the Civil War. The monument was erected by Meldrum's two elder brothers. The sculpture was imported from Italy and was based on a photograph of Meldrum. The song inscribed on the side of the shaft was written by John Hugh MacNaughton, a Caledonia resident.
