Description:
The painting depicts a scene from Washington Irving's story "The Pride of the Village" from the "Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent." in which a young woman whose beauty makes her the pride of the village falls ill when she hears that the army officer she has fallen in love with has been transferred to another post. The young woman seated in a chair with a pillow and blanket is comforted by her mother, seated next to her, holding her daughter's left hand. Her worried father seated at a table opposite her, holds her right hand.
