Remarks:
Sculpture was commissioned by the Lawrence City Commission and the Lawrence Arts Commission in 1980. The city contributed $17,500 and the arts commission raised another $17,500 for the $35,000 total cost which included installation and site preparation. The artist was inspired in part by an inscription on the city hall building taken from a poem by Langston Hughes, who spent part of his childhood in Lawrence: We have tomorrow bright before us like a flame.
