Darley "Spike had breasted the yawl close up to the hole where it was held by the men while the Captain himself passed the lantern and his own head into the opening to reconnoitre." signed Description:  Illustration from James Fenimore Cooper's "Jack Tier" shows Spike and the other sailors seated in a rowboat while the ship's captain kneels on the deck of his sinking ship, shining a lantern into a gaping hole in the deck.
