Remarks:
The sculpture honors Dr. Isaiah F. Everhart (1840-1911), founder of the Everhart Museum of Natural History, Science and Art, and famed naturalist. The sculpture was a gift of naturalist B. H. Warren of West Chester, Pennsylvania. Dr. Everhart settled in Scranton in 1868 after serving in the Civil War. He worked as a surgeon of the 9th Pennsylvania Regiment during the 1870s and was one of the first members of the medical staff of the hospital which later became Scranton State General Hospital. Everhart was a partner with his brother, James, in operation of the Everhart Brass Works. Dr. Everhart donated $100,000 to erect the museum and endowed it with $100,000. The sculpture was planned months before Dr. Everhart's death in 1911; however, it was not completed and installed until some time after his death. Nearby plaque reads: ISAIAH F. EVERHART/M.D./NATURALIST/1910. IAS files contain a related article from The Scranton Sunday Times, Nov. 10, 1968.
