This painting, taken from of sketch by Raphael, reproduces the subject of a painting by the Greek painter Apelles, which was described in classical times by Lucian, and mentioned in the Renaissance by Leon Battista Alberti in his treatise "De Pictura." In this painting there is a seated figure of Credulity with long ears, flanked by figures of Ignorance and Suspicion. Standing in front of them is Malice who precedes the female figure of Calumny. Calumny, dragging Innocence by the hair, is accompanied by Envy, Fraud, and Artifice. Behind this group is the hooded figure of Repentance, who turns to look at the naked figure of Truth.
