In 1997, town historian Alice Begley reported that the portrait hangs in the Town Hall while awaiting restoration of the Schoolcraft Mansion which will be used as a cultural center in his name. Congressman John L. Schoolcraft was born in 1806 and died on July 7, 1860 in St. Catherines, Ontario, Canada, while returning from a Whig convention in Chicago. He was elected as a Whig candidate to the 31st and 32nd Congress. He married Caroline Canfield in Albany in 1853. Schoolcraft was also named president of the Albany Commercial Bank in 1854 and was president of the Albany Gallery of Fine Arts.
