Title:
The First Discussion of the Platte Purchase, (painting).
Dates:
ca. 1917-1928.
Dimensions:
12 x 6 ft.
Description:
This lunette, one of twenty-two along the second floor corridor, depicts General Andrew S. Hughes standing atop a tree stump addressing a group of settlers gathered at Dale's Farm, near Liberty, Missouri. Standing against a tree behind him is General Alexander W. Doniphan. The settlers have gathered to discuss the acquisition of the fertile Platte River country for the state of Missouri, although the land had been assigned to three Indian tribes after Missouri was admitted to the Union. The settlers approved of the acquisition, and a committee was formed to draft a request from Congress. The "Platte Purchase" took place through the efforts of the Missouri delegation in Congress, at a cost of $7,500. A treaty was negotiated with the Indians by explorer William Clark.
