Owner:
Wadsworth Atheneum, 600 Main Street, Hartford, Connecticut 06103 Accession Number: 1948.204
Provenance:
Bequest of Gould, Clara Hinton, Santa Barbara, California 1948.
Remarks:
The painting was formerly attributed to Homer Dodge Martin. "A later signature "H. D. Martin" was added to the painting at the lower left; it floated on top of the varnish surface and was removed in 1969, uncovering the remains of an indecipherable original signature, apparently deliberately removed." The painting has been attributed to Sanford Gifford both in style and in subject matter. Gifford was known to have traveled frequently to Lake Kenogamy in Quebec in the 1870s. A now unlocated painting titled "A Rainy Day on Lake Kenogamy" (1878) was exhibited at the memorial exhibition of Gifford's paintings.
